In May of 1987, MTV introduced me to a single called 'Just Like Heaven' by the Cure. As soon as I raided my dad's change jar, I rode my Schwinn over to Hegewisch Records to purchase the extended cassette of 'Kiss me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me' by the Cure. I heard this song in my friend's car while we in Vegas last year. I fell in love with this record because of this song. It came out in 2004, so I am waaaayyyyy behind on this one, but it has a lot to like about it. There's some Slowdive in there, some Stereolab, some Lush, and quite a bit of edge in parts. Enjoy.

Last week, for the first time in a couple of years, I listened to Figure 8 by Elliott Smith. I actually got a little teary-eyed. This guy was amazing. I saw him almost every time he came to Chicago and he never failed to impress. I miss anticipating new music from him. Unfortunately, he was in too much pain, and took his own life. Such a waste of talent.

If you haven't listened to him, I would highly recommend his albums Either/Or, Figure 8, and XO.

My sister is one of the biggest musical influences on me. She's quite a bit older than I am and when I was younger, I used to sneak into her room and listen to her tapes and records. She had this amazing soundsystem, and I think I used it more than she did, but her record collection changed my life, musically.

Admittedly this version is off of Substance and is not the original recording, but it was my original introduction to this band and to new genres of music. Thanks sis, I appreciate it everyday.

I want to preface this post by saying that I hate almost anything that U2 has put out since Achtung Baby, and with good reason. These guys used to be AMAZING. They were exciting and vibrant. Their music was on the fringe of punk and new wave, and their success, as well as that of other bands of their time, helped birth "alternative" music. Bono wasn't just some cartoonish rock star in too large sunglasses and the Edge was a guitar God. In my opinion, side 2 of the Joshua Tree is one of the greatest pieces of rock and roll recording ever produced.

I love this band. I thought they were totally overrated, then I saw them live. They probably are overrated, but I don't care, they are awesome live and they remind me of the Replacements and Sugar. This is off of their new one, which I am enjoying immensely.

Catherine Wheel is one of those bands that should have been much bigger than they were. It amazes me that they didn't get the stateside popularity that I expected for them. But noooooo, you were all listening to bullshit like Fastball and Marcy Playground. I like sex, and I like candy. How about a song that merges the two in the chorus? The rest of it will be shit, but people could say "Did you hear that Sex and Candy song?"
